Chromebook Tip: How To Perform A Screenshot

Here is a handy tip if you are using a Chromebook and need to perform a screen capture.

To do this, you have two options:

Hold down Ctrl + “Switch window” key to capture a full screenshot

OR

Hold down Ctrl + Shift + “Switch window” key to capture a partial screenshot.

Explain and Send Screenshots by Jason Savard

“Explain and Send Screenshots” is a browser extension (new to me) that gives you the ability to capture screenshots and to record video of your screen. Once the capture is performed, you can write text, crop an image and perform other functions in the editor that is built in (such as insert arrows, lines, and circles to point things out). I especially like the option of uploading my own images into the editor; which, is an option you do not typically see in these type of browser extensions.

I am still playing around with this extension; however, I can tell you the developer is top notch, for which I encourage you to explore some of his other browser extensions (that in my opinion are the best out there).

Google Chrome Extension – Nimbus Screenshot and Screen Video Recorder

If you use the Google Chrome Browser or own a Chromebook, you need to install the browser extension called Nimbus. This extension, to me, is hybrid in nature between a browser extension and an actual app. I can tell you it is the best, by far, screen and video capture extension (app) out there for Google Chrome and the Chromebook. The clips that you capture can be edited (with the built in editor) and stored locally on your computer or online (at Nimbus or Google Drive or Slack).

In summary, here is what Nimbus can do:

Capture screenshots

– Capture the whole web page or a required section of it

– Capture the whole browser window

– Capture the browser window of other programs

– Quick capture site fragment

– Create your own drawing or model from scratch

Record screencasts (video from screen)

– Record video from your screen/tab (Screencasts)

– Record video from other active program

– Customize your screen resolution and FPS

– You can draw on video

Edit screenshots

– Paste different patterns and text boxes to your screenshot

– Resize and crop your screenshot

– Add arrows and stickers to your screenshot

– Highlight text on your screenshot

PicPick – An all-in-one (FREE) program that provides full-featured screen capture, image editor, color picker, color palette, pixel ruler, protractor, crosshair and even whiteboard…

Noticed a new version of PicPick on their site and thought I would give another shout-out for this program. This program is very good, is free and serves as an all-in-one program that provides full-featured screen capture, image editor, color picker, color palette, pixel ruler, protractor, crosshair and even whiteboard…  PicPick is available as a Windows install or portable app.

Snipaste – A FREE, Customizable, and Portable Screen Capture Program

I love screen capture programs and I can tell you that Snipaste is a keeper. Simply download either the 32bit or 64bit version, unzip the file, start the application and press F1 to start snipping. You can also press F3 to paste whatever it is you snipped into its’ own floating Windows. Due that this program is a little different than what I was accustomed to when it comes to screen capture utilities, there was a short learning curve involved. Once I conquered that, I was very impressed with Snipaste (especially, its’ on-the-fly editor) and see where it will increase my productivity; especially, when using images in my blog posts.

Snipaste is an easy screen capture and image edition program, with the ability to detect windows and menus and supporting pixel-level control. Both captured images and various clipboard content can be pasted as a floating window to the desktop. Windows can be moved, organized into groups, saved to file, as well as basic editions like rotation, zoom, translucence etc.

The program can grab colors, supports themes and includes multi-screen support. The default keys (which can be customized) are F1 for Snip and F3 for Paste.

A Nice Android Screen Capture and Photo Markup Tool

Grabbing a screenshot on an Android device, such as a smartphone or tablet, can be a pain in the droid…

Typically, you can hold down the power button and volume down button simultaneously to perform a screen capture; however, on a phone like mine, that maneuver is quite difficult. Besides, if you are not familier with using an Android file manager, locating the file is another frustration.

The solution is an app that is designed to perform screen captures. Today, I tried quite a few of them; five of them to be exact; and, the one I settled on was one called Screen Master. What I really like about this app is that it is FREE; has a small size less than 5 MBs; no rooting is required; can crop captured images; can easily share whatever it is you capture; and, with the photo markup tool you can add text, arrows, circles, and even turn the captured area into a shape (such as a heart)… As a matter of fact, you can use the photo markup tool to work with existing photos on your device.

Screen Master has a mid level learning curve, but once you get the hang of using Screen Master you will wonder why something like this is not already built into Android.

Screen Master: Screenshot & Photo Markup- screenshot

Key Features:

1. Capture Screenshot, included:

– Selection screenshots
– Take screenshots by floating button
– Shake to take screenshots
Note: Floating button and Shake function are available on Android 5.0 or later

2. Image Markup, included:

– Cropping and rotation
– Photo Pixelated
– Add text on photo, custom color, style, size
– Doodle on photo, all tools you need: Arrow, Rect, Circle, Pen
– Large images can be directly annotated and do not have to be cropped
– Not only screenshots but all images are supported, you could import photo from gallery
– HD save and share with your friends

Using The Fireshot Browser Extension To Email Web Content To My Gmail Note Taking Account

This is sort of a repost of two things that go hand-in-hand… I recently posted the article, “How To Use A Gmail Account To Create Your Own Customized Note-Taking App“; AND ALSO, back in December posted the article, “FireShot – Google Chrome Extension to Take Screenshots“.

My project of customizing and using a Gmail account solely as a note taking app is working better than I ever anticipated and better than the other note-taking apps I was using (such as Evernote, OneNote, and Simplenote). I don’t see me going back to anything else. Just too many benefits with using the Gmail platform…

One benefit that I am taking advantage of is the FREE version of the Fireshot browser extension which allows you to capture an entire web page, the visible part of a page or a specific part of a page (that you can select). Where the benefit to me with this is that Fireshot has an option where you can use Gmail to send whatever it is that you clipped (in the PDF, PNG or JPEG formats). I prefer the PDF format due that after the conversion is made, the links in the captured page are active. Many of the other note taking apps have browser extensions that allow you to clip web site text, pictures, pages, etc… I can now do the same (and better) by using Fireshot to email web content to my Gmail Note Taking account. Fireshot is available as an extension for Firefox, Chrome, Opera or IE.

Learn How To Find and Use The Windows Snipping Tool

A forgotten feature (or app) in Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 is the Windows screen capture utility, called the “Snipping Tool”. Personally, I use a third party screen capture utility called FSCapture; but, there are more times than I can remember where I was away from my computer (such as at work) and needed to quickly capture something on the screen and did not have FSCapture available.

If you are not familiar with the “Snipping Tool”; it is a built-in Windows Accessory (software app), once launched, that gives you the ability to take a snapshot of anything you see on your screen, whether it be full screen or just a specific region of the screen. After you take the screenshot, you can then save it to various graphic file formats (such as PNG, JPG GIF), that can be inserted in a document, sent via email, archived, etc… As a blogger, I would be lost without a screen capture utility and my productivity (and presentation) would diminish.

Typically, on Windows 10, the tool can be found under the Windows Accessories folder on the Start Menu; however, here is several ways to get to it, using the search box, on Windows 10, 8.1 and 7:

For Windows 10 – Select the Start  button, type snipping tool in the search box on the taskbar, and then select Snipping Tool from the list of results.

For Windows 8.1 / Windows RT 8.1 – Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Search (or if you’re using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Search), type snipping tool in the search box, and then select Snipping Tool from the list of results.

For Windows 7 – Select the Start  button, then type snipping tool in the search box, and then select Snipping Tool from the list of results.

In Snipping Tool, select Mode (in older versions, select the arrow next to the New button), choose the kind of snip you want, and then select the area of your screen that you want to capture. After you are satisfied with the result, simply save it to the file format you desire.

FireShot – Google Chrome Extension to Take Screenshots

I recently installed FireShot and have been quite impressed. FireShot is a Google Chrome browser extension that gives you the very convenient ability to capture screenshots. You can quickly capture full web pages in their entirety; capture only visible portions of the screen; or, capture selective areas on the screen. Once you make the screen capture you can save the screenshot to disk (as a PDF, JPeg, or Png) or you can copy it to the clipboard.

Malwarebytes’ Junkware Removal Tool

… and, MORE GREAT GEEK SQUEAK STUFF (#2016-018)

Malwarebytes has a junkware removal tool that I was unaware about that will aggressively perform the following tasks:

  • Removes adware that spawn popup ads, such as Conduit
  • Uninstalls unwanted toolbars and browser helper objects, including the Ask and Babylon toolbars
  • Removes potentially unwanted programs (PUPs)
  • Cleans up traces left behind by PUPs

I am a big user of the Malwarebyte products and decided to give this tool a test run. To run the tool, simply download and run it. A command-line window will open up that will prompt you to hit a key on your keyboard to launch the program.  If you have any browser windows open, they will automatically be closed. In the end I found that the tool is pretty aggressive in its’ cleaning to the point it actually removed one of my Chrome browser extensions that I use on a regular basis.  With that being said, I recommend you make a note of what extensions you have. If you are in a situation where you find your PC running slow and suspect an infection, you may want to run this tool.

Free Alternative to Office365 Called Open365I Love Free Software has a great article about LibreOffice’s new alternative to Office365 called Open365. After reading the article I went ahead and opened an account (for FREE) at Open365  (which appears to be in beta). Once I opened the account, client software was downloaded to my PC; which, I opted to not install. Instead, I went directly to the cloud-based version of Open365. First impression, not bad…  Will be keeping an eye on this.

Geek Squeaks #2015-6 @ What’s On My PC (Featuring – Did You Know Windows 10 Is Sharing Your Computer?)

Windows 10 Is Sharing Your Computer By Default – I found this article on PCWorld (How to stop Windows 10 from using your PC’s bandwidth to update strangers’ systems) that explains how Microsoft is a using a new peer-to-peer (P2P) delivery update mechanism (in Windows 10) that turns your Windows 10 PC (by default) into a server for distributing updates to other machines.

Hmmm…  I’m not liking the sound of this. Anyhow, the setting or toggle to turn this off is buried in the update and security settings.  CLICK HERE to learn how to turn this off.

Make Sure You Check Out This Screen Capture Program – I use screen capture utilities on a daily basis and would be lost without one. A new kid on the block recently to me is ShareX. This utility is being updated regularly and the most recent update allows you to either perform a full installation or the option to install the program as a portable app. Very nice screen capture program that does not disappoint. Best thing about ShareX is that it is FREE, Open Source and there are no embedded advertisements.

A FREE Screen Capture Program That You Must Have

Just when I think I am running out of steam and have tried and tested all the screen capture programs out there, I find ShareX…  Really, I do not know how I missed this awesome “must have” screen capture program.

ShareX

What makes ShareX standout is that you can upload your screenshots to over 25 different file hosting services. The ShareX user interface is easy to use and understand allowing you to use hotkeys to initiate a screen grab (or capture); or you can launch the screen capture selections by right mouse clicking the ShareX icon in the system tray. ShareX can capture screenshots with different shapes such as rectangular, rectangular rounded, ellipses, triangular, diamond, polygon and freehand. There is a built in editor where you can apply different effects (such as transparency, shadowing, torn edges, text, borders, etc…).

ShareX is available as a full install and if you dig deep enough on the site you will find that there is a portable app version as well (which is what I went for)…  Really nice screen capture program that is open source and FREE.

How To Activate the Floating Assistant Menu On The Samsung Galaxy Tab S

I recently purchased the Samsung Galaxy Tab S (8.4 inch) Android tablet; AND, after having owned several Android tablets, this one is definitely the cream of the crop.

I continue to learn to navigate the tablet and came across a setting that I have found to be very useful that many users most likely will not try (because they do not know it is there or how to turn it “on”). It is called an Assistant Menu, that once activated, creates a small (square) floating icon (that can be moved around the screen) that will give you the ability to launch various actions, such as:

  • Home
  • Back
  • Recently Opened Apps
  • Lock and Turn Off Screen
  • Brightness Adjustment
  • Volume Adjustment
  • Screen Capture
  • Open Notification List
  • Power Off
  • Restart
  • Device Options
  • Settings
  • Cursor
  • More Options
  • Rotate Screen
  • Zoom

SPECIAL NOTE: If you notice on the list above there is one option that will give you the ability to grab screenshots, which is worth its’ weight in gold. I used that option to create the screenshot below.

The neat thing about all of this is that this floating assistant menu can be edited; and, the functions you find that you would use the most, can be reordered. The menu is easy to turn “on” and if you find you do not like it, simply go back and turn it “off”.

To turn this menu “on” and to get you to the place to where you need to be, here is how to turn “on” and edit the menu:

  • On the Apps screen, tap Settings > Device > Accessibility > Dexterity and Interaction
  • Tap the Assistant Menu Switch to toggle the switch to “on”. The Assistant Menu icon will appear at the bottom right of the screen (at which point it can be moved around).
  • To edit the menu, simply tap where it says  Assistant Menu > Edit (see screenshot below). At this point you can drag the icons around and place them in the order you desire. The order you see below is the actual order I set for my menu.  You can also remove various components from the menu.  For example, using the screenshot below, I opted to remove Cursor, More Options, Rotate Screen and Zoom from the menu.

A 5 Star Google Chrome Screen Capture Utility

I love screen capture applications due they are very useful in drafting articles for the blog and for everyday computing. I have featured other capture programs on the blog, and every I time turn around I stumble across another one. The one I present today, called FireShot, I somehow missed on my radar. FireShot currently is carrying a 5 star rating (from over 7500 reviews) and was selected in 2013 as “The Best Free Google Chrome Extension for 2013″ by PCMAG.COM”. FireShot is available as a Google Chrome Extension from the Chrome Web Store.

FireShot Screen Capture Utility

FireShot typically performs like many of the other screen capture utilities; however, it offers more features than what else is out there. For example, one feature that really jumped out at me is that you can capture a page (or part of page) with FireShot and save it as a PDF file.

This is only one of the features and is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to FireShot.

Other features are:

✓ Capture web pages entirely

✓ Capture only visible part of the page

✓ Capture selection

✓ Save screenshot to disk as PDF, PNG, and JPEG

✓ Copy screenshot to clipboard

✓ Print screenshot

Additionally, users on Windows can do the following:

✓ Edit screenshot: crop, resize, add text and arrow annotations, blur areas and apply other effects

✓ Print

✓ Save screenshot to PDF files

✓ Save screenshot to disk as PDF, PNG, GIF, JPEG, BMP

✓ Send to OneNote (Pro version)

✓ Upload to Twitter, Google Picasa, Facebook, ImageShack, Flickr, EasyCaptures

✓ Copy screenshot to clipboard

✓ Print screenshot

✓ E-Mail

✓ Export to external editor

Nimbus Screenshot – Probably The Best Browser Screen Capture Extension In The Google Chrome Store

As a blog writer it is necessary to have a good screen capture application available. Probably the best screen capture extension in the Google Chrome Store right now is Nimbus Screenshot: Capture and Annotate.

Nimbus Screenshot: Capture and Annotate

Nimbus Screenshot fits in well with ScribeFire, that is also a Chrome browser extension, that I use to draft my blog articles. With both of these extensions in place, all articles that I compose are performed directly in my browser (Google Chrome and/or Chromium) making my writing experience much more pleasant, efficient, and faster.

Nimbus Screenshot gives you the ability to capture a whole Web page (snipping tool), a part of it or the whole browser window. Built in is an optional editor, with a very user-friendly interface, where you can edit your captures, crop your images; AND, add text (or comments), lines, arrows, circles, rectangles, etc… When done you can save your screenshots to your Google Drive or Nimbus account. The free Nimbus account allows you to save up to 100 mbs of data a month.

As a side note, which I need to explore further; Nimbus also offers, in a addition to the Google Chrome browser extension, a screen capture app for the Windows, Android, and Firefox platforms.

Awesome Screenshot (Capture and Annotate) Google Chrome Browser Extension (Five Star Rating)

As a blogger I often use a screen capture program to grab screenshots to use in my postings. Most screen capture programs I use are locally installed Windows programs; however, lately I have been using the Google Chrome browser extension called Awesome Screenshot (Capture and Annotate) to grab screenshots to post in Scribefire which is the editor I use to draft my posts.

One of my goals in my blog drafting and posting is to solely find ways to use my browser to do all the work, without relying on locally installed software. Using Awesome Screenshot (Capture and Annotate) and Scribefire together, which is also a browser extension, is bringing me closer to that goal.

Awesome Screenshot One thing I want to point out about Awesome Screenshot (Capture and Annotateis that it is one of the highest rated browser extensions, with approximately 1.3 million users, at the Chrome Web Store, which speaks highly of this application.

Capture the whole page or any portion, annotate screenshot, blur sensitive info, one-click upload to share.

Capture

1. Capture or clip selected area, or all visible portion, or entire page

2. Support  PNG format

3  Support  horizontal scroll when capturing

Annotate & Edit

1.Annotate it with rectangles, circles, arrows, lines and text

2.Crop and scroll & Show crop area dimension

3. Use eraser to hide sensitive information

4. Copy the screenshot  and paste it to gmail etc. Support Windows and Linux.

Save & Share

1. Save to Local

2. One-click to upload to awesomescreenshot.com and get a shareable link

3. Support Google Drive (Gdrive) Now.

3. Save very large image, by pass the 2M limit. No crash any more.

An Extremely Versatile and Configurable Screen Capture Utility

I have tried just about every screen capture utility out there, but a new one landed on my plate that I can only describe as being in the category of awesome (especially for being free and portable). It is called LiveCapture.

I am not going to get into the details, because the screen shot below tells it all; and, besides part of the fun with a program such as this is exploring all of the program options. The only thing I don’t like about LiveCapture is that when you run it, a capture toolbar initially appears that really does not (in my opinion) do the program any justice (unless you like toolbars). The good, or at least for me, is that you can turn the toolbar “off”.  Where this program really shines is when you right click on the LiveCapture icon in the system tray (as the screenshot below reflects) to show what this gem can do.  Again, awesome

A FREE Web Based Screen Recorder

Screencast-O-Matic Recently my brother asked me if I could download  some online video news footage of his son (my nephew) in a featured sporting event? They wanted to archive the video so that his son (my nephew) would have something in the future to show his kids.  Exhausting all of the tricks that I knew for grabbing the download stream of the video, I had to start thinking outside the box, which is something new for me, and focused on not downloading the video, but on a method to capture (or record the video). I knew from experience I could install software to perform this task; however, I did not want to install any software and began to wonder if there were any online web based services out there where I could perform this task. This is when and how I discovered the online web based screen recorder service called Screencast-O-Matic .

Using my web browser and a microphone connected to the computer I used Screencast-O-Matic to record (and capture) the video and audio of the news clip. The end result turned out better than I ever anticipated.

Screencast-O-Matic is a web based screen recorder that can be used in an instance such as I described, but is primarily designed to record your actions on the computer for purposes of “how to” instruction.

There is nothing to install when using Screencast-O-Matic.  Visit the website, click on Start Recording.  The first occasion of using Screencast-O-Matic you will be prompted to download a Java Plugin.

Following the download, the adjustable Screencast-O-Matic capture window, with various controls, will appear on the screen.  The capture window will remain on the window over top of any application you bring up.

image

There is a FREE and PRO version of Screencast-O-Matic .  The FREE version enables you to:

  • Record for a max of 15 minutes
  • FREE Hosting (15 minutes per upload)
  • Upload to YouTube HD
  • Export to MP4, AVI, FLV movie
  • Record web camera

Best Full Featured All-In-One Screen Capture Program

I have said it before and will say it again. If there is a software package out there that is FREE, that continues to evolve and is of great quality; it will be worthy of mention here at What’s On My PC, over and over. I call software apps of this calibre, Hall of Fame software.

Today I bring you a small screen capture application, called PicPick, that definitely falls into that Hall of Fame category and is in a class of its’ own. Since my last review of PicPick, this application has come a long ways’.

PicPick

A screen capture application is a software app that allows you take a snapshot of what’s on your computer screen, whether it is the whole screen or just a portion of it, and save it as a graphic file.  The good about this is, once you have the captured screen in a graphic file format, you can then insert it into documents or simply save the captured file to disk. If you are a graphic designer, software developer, a blogger, a desktop publisher, a Powerpoint user or someone at home who simply needs something that will allow you to grab clips on the internet, then PicPick, I highly recommend.

Now that you have a general idea of what a screen capture application, what is so great about PicPick?  It is simply this, PicPick is easy to use well thought out application; AND for a small program application that you can also carry around on your flash drive, it is loaded with additional features.

After PicPick is installed and launched you will see the PicPick icon in the system tray (bottom right corner of your screen on the taskbar). Simply click on that icon and you will be presented with a popup menu that is self explanatory. If you notice the screenshot below, I want you to look at the other tools that are included such as a color picker, color palette, magnifier, pixel ruler, protractor, cross hair, whiteboard and image editor. All of these tools are mini apps in themselves that compliment the task of screen capturing.

PicPick

The image editor is what has most impressed me and has greatly improved since the last review. For example, for the screenshot above, I selected “fixed region”, to capture a fixed area on the screen and once I made the capture, the capture automatically opened in the “Image Editor”; very nice. I was then able to manipulate the image in the editor any way I liked. There are numerous enhancement options in the editor that are just plain awesome.

Screenshot – [click here]

Screenshot

Well, you heard me rave about this app and the only thing I can tell you is to download it and play with it. Very, very nice (FREE) software app that is well worth installing on your PC. Kudos to the developer of PicPick.  PicPick is FREE for personal use [ click here ] .

Screen Capture for the Internet

My fellow blogger at Piyada’s World has pointed us to yet another screen capture utility called PrintScreen.Me. The unique thing about this utility is that it is a cloud app in that it works in unison with Facebook, Twitter, Picasa, Flickr or PrintScreenMe. You can send your screen captures directly to those sites.  I encourage you to [ CLICK HERE ] to get the scoop, at Piyada’s World, on this new internet screen capture utility.  PrintScreen.Me is currently in beta.

Great Review of FREE Screen Capture Tools

Some things just should not go unrecognized. Arafat Hossain Piyada, a young tech-blogger from Kolkata, India; who is the blogmaster of Piyada’s World has put together a nice comparison review of 14 FREE Screen Capture Utilities (with Editor Tools) that you need to take a look at.  A lot of work and testing went into compiling this list.

Screen Capture

Well, it’s true all blogger use this tool so as developer but regular user are not far behind. We all need to capture screen every now and then. I know there is a build in key named PrintScrn which help you to capture image but you need to do manual work to adjust it to fit your need. What a waste of time? More importantly default MS Paint is not enough as a image editor, specially for developer and blogger. So I make this listening to help every type of community.

A FREE Supercharged Screen Capture Utility

I do a lot of Powerpoint slide graphic creation and design for my church and training presentations for my work. I would be at a loss if I did not have in my toolbox a good “all round” screen capture utility that allowed me to manipulate screen captures, pick colors, edit images, etc.  Many of the screen capture apps that are multi-functional are often found at a price.

PicPick

One screen capture app that I have been closely monitoring is called PicPick Tools.  This little application can be installed on your PC or used as a portable app on your flash drive.  Most recently I have noticed that PicPick development has picked up with additional features being added.  My experience with this app is that it is closing in on some of the commercial apps that are out there’; AND for me personally, PicPick is becoming a mainstay application on my PC that I use to compliment my blogging and Powerpoint slide building.

If you do not have a screen capture utility installed on your PC, I suggest you give this one try – [ GET IT HERE ] .

Get the last FREE version of FastStone Capture

A screen capture utility is a “must have” on any PC (or flash drive); especially if you are a writer, blogger, graphic designer, desktop publisher, etc… I have tried and tested many of the capture utilities and the one that has set well with me is “FastStone Capture”.  FastStone Capture went commercial after version 5.3; however, the freeware version is still available at various sites around the internet.  This little utility is a well thought out screen capture utility. It  is no wonder the author opted to go commercial with it.

Before I tell you where you can get FastStone Capture (the last freeware version), let me give you some hightlights. The download that I will refer you to is a download for the portable version that can be installed on your flash drive or into a folder of your choice on your PC. This way, if you do not like it, simply delete the folder; but I’m telling you this little app rocks and is very easy to use.

FastStone Capture uses very little screen space and provides (6) different screen capture modes (see below) that can be activated by clicking one of the mode buttons in the application or by using hotkey combinations on your keyboard.

FastStone_Capture

1. Capture Active Window

2. Capture Window /Object

3. Capture Rectangle Region

4. Capture Freehand Region

5. Capture Full Screen

6. Capture Scrolling Window

With FastStone Capture you have the option of sending the captured result to a built in graphic editor, to the clipboard, to a file, to the printer, or to an email (as an attachment).  The output file can be saved to the most common graphic file formats (e.g. gif, png, bmp, jpg, tif) or as a PDF file. Settings are also available that allow you to auto capture to an edge/watermark or to prompt you each time to assign a caption or label to your captured result.  This little app also features a built-in graphic editor, a screen magnifier and a screen color picker.

If you do not have this app, I suggest you get it now…  You can download FastStone Capture (last freeware version) [ HERE ] .

If you would like to take a look at the paid (current version), CLICK HERE

Kudos to the author of FastStone Capture for making such a wonderful application.

ScreenToaster – An “Awesome and Free” web based screen recorder!

ScreenToaster is another one of those cloud apps that I have found to be amazing… Remember, “cloud apps” are web based services that we access from the internet; in lieu of installed software on our computer. ScreenToaster is a cloud app that provides you with the capability of capturing live (real-time) audio, live (real-time) screen activity and live (real-time) webcam images from your computer. This is an excellent resource in the event you need to create and share tutorials, demos, training, lectures and more.

www.screentoaster.com

ScreenToaster

I found ScreenToaster very easy to use. After you setup an account with ScreenToaster, you simply click on the “Start Recording” button and a small java applet is downloaded to your PC and the following dialogue box will appear.

ScreenToaster

After making your selections, remember to keep the ScreenToaster window minimized and remember the “Alt+S” hotkey to start and pause your recording. When you are done the recording, hit “Alt+S” to pause the recording, then maximize the “ScreenToaster” window and click on “Stop Recording”. That is it…  ScreenToaster does the rest.

Here is a sample screen capture video that I created. Click on the video graphic below and you will be redirected to the “ScreenToaster” site where you can directly play the video (with audio) in a window or full screen. I suggest you try both options. I think you wil find the results quite good.

ScreenToaster - Click to see video!

Following your recording, options are available to upload your video to your ScreenToaster account or to a YouTube account. You can make your captured video private or public. There are also 2-(two) options available to covert and download your video to your computer (.avi or .flv file formats).

Capture that screen…

Did you know that if you hit the “print screen” key on your keyboard, it will take a snapshot of what you have displayed on your screen. You initially do not see the snapshot, until you paste it into an application. For example, hit the “print screen” key, then open your word processing program, such as WordPad, Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, etc. Once you have a blank document open, do a “right” mouse click and select “paste” (or can do CTRL-V on the keyboard). The snapshot that you took of the screen will appear in the document, which can ultimately be resized or cropped… This is a down and dirty way to do a screen capture in a pinch; however, there is a ton of software applications out there that will give you a whole lot more options. If you are someone who works with graphics, documents, blogs, etc. on a regular basis, it is a necessity to have a good screen capture program.  I am currently using (2)-two screen capturing utilities on my PC (EasyCapture and PicPick Tools).  Both are very good and both are being continually developed.

There are (2)-Two “FREE” Screen Capture programs that I recommend:

EasyCapture

One program that I use is called EasyCapture. EasyCapture is FREE and has the ability to capture any part of the screen, scrolling windows and entire web pages. Once you perform a capture you can use the built in editor to add text, draw lines, draw arrows, plug in text balloons, etc… AND you can save the the captured image in a variety of commonly used graphic formats (bmp, jpg, gif, png, tiff). I have found this capturing program to be comparable to many of the commercial programs that are available and the best part about it is that it is FREE. The program provides various capturing options:

Capture full screen, active window,

Capture windows, buttons, toolbar, controls and other windows objects.

Capture selected region.

Capture scrolling windows and entire web pages.

Capture fix-size region.

Support OS: Windows Vista, WinXP, Win2000

PicPick Tools

PicPick

PicPick Tools is another screen capturing program that I recently came across, that is portable (can be run from your flash drive).  I was quite surprised I had never seen this program before, due to the fact that I love screen capturing utilities.  I have tested this program as well; and was really impressed with it’s functionality.   It features a powerful capture tool, image editor, color picker, color palette, pixel ruler, protractor, crosshair, whiteboard and etc. After you launch the program, you simply select the tool you want by clicking on the tray icon.
