TECH NEWS: Former hacker warns against password reuse

This is a “must-read” article for everybody at home. If you reuse login credentials and never change your passwords, you are at high risk of being compromised. I have assisted many folks over the years and I saw this all of the time. As a matter of fact, most folks at home will have those login credentials near the computer somewhere, often in plain view…

Thanks for visting…
Rick @ What’s On My PC

The reuse of login credentials in my opinion is the greatest security flaw that we have today.

The advice for users of online services remains the same. First, use a password manager that automatically generates and stores strong passwords for each account you create. Second, where possible, turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) for the sites you visit. This could involve SMS verification or, more secure still, a mobile app like Google Authenticator.

Why I Chose Amazon Photos to Archive my Family Photos in the Cloud

I recently received notice from Amazon offering a $15 credit toward my Prime Account if I installed their photo app on my phone. After reading the article reflected below, I am seriously considering it.

This is a great article about the various cloud-based photo storage sites. The author, in this case, opted to go with Amazon Photos (through Amazon Prime) which gives you unlimited storage; plus, all photos are uploaded at their original resolution and size.

At Home with Tech

Good photo organization means having a plan that allows you to quickly and easily access your most important photos from anywhere. Here’s why I chose Amazon to help me out…

I’ve talked about how important it is to maintain your most important pictures in cloud-based photo albums that you can access from anywhere, including your smartphone. These are the photos that reflect back on your life’s big moments… not necessarily the best few pics from your recent family vacation.
(Your smartphone’s local photo app and your index finger can handle that.)

If you sit down for a few minutes and think about which groups of pictures you’ll always want available at a moment’s notice, you’ll probably come up a short list of categories.

I decided to create this group of cloud photo albums that I can also share with my wife:

  • Our son’s first day of school each year and…

Which is the better hard drive? The HDD (Hard Disk Drive) or The SSD (Solid State Drive)

The hard drive is the device inside your computer that stores your personal files and stores the files that work together to operate your computer (such as the Windows Operating System files). Over the years the hard drive has transformed from the HDD mechanical hard disk drive (with high-speed moving parts) to now what is known as the SSD solid-state drive (with no moving parts).

Below is a quick read summary to show how the SSD (Solid State Drive) is really your better option in today’s world of computing; but, both options are still available for purchase and both serve a purpose (i.e. CLICK HERE to see pricing for HDD – CLICK HERE to see pricing for SSD).

HDD = Hard Disk Drive = metal platters/mechanical = 2.5″/3.5″ common size = Large Storage Capacities = Moving Parts = Increased Heat = Degradation of Parts = Louder = Slower = Less Expensive = Good for File Storage

HDD vs SSD

SSD = Solid State Drive = flash / non-mechanical = 2.5″ common size = Smaller Storage Capacities = No Moving Parts = Decreased Heat = Better Longevity = Quieter = Faster = More Expensive (but not by much in comparison).= Great for Primary Storage of the Operating System and Great Upgrade Option for Older PC’s

Decided to categorize this under “How To” understand the difference between 4K Ultra HD, 1080p, and 720p TV resolutions. This article is very helpful in learning what this all means when it comes to making that TV purchase. For example, I learned from this article (at Digital Trends) that “If you’re buying a 24-inch TV for your kitchen, for example, you’re barely going to notice the difference between 720p and 1080p. Similarly, if you’re buying a 32-inch TV for your bedroom, you’re not going to notice many benefits from 4K resolution.” With that being said, depending on your needs, you could save a boatload of money. By the way, the 720p or 1080p TV’s, factoring in the current the drop in prices, make great computer monitors…  Thanks for visiting — Rick @ What’s On My PC

Sometimes researching a new TV can feel more like math homework than preparing for a major purchase. You’re immediately bombarded with terms like 4K Ultra HD, 1080p, and 720p — what are those letters and numbers supposed to mean? Don’t worry; it turns out that this is a lot easier to figure out than it may seem at first.

“The Best Password Managers of 2019” by Clifford Colby @ c|net

LastPass, I highly recommend… With a password manager, you only need to remember one password to open up the password vault; and with LastPass, it will generate strong passwords for you. You can also store other information such as credit card information, driver’s license information, etc… in your LastPass Vault. LastPass was rated in this article by c|net as the “Best Free Password Manager”.  Click on the source link below to learn more about password managers, by Clifford Colby, and how you can get LastPass (or any of the others you may be interested in).

Thanks for visiting — Rick @ What’s On My PC

Simply, a password manager is an encrypted digital vault that stores the login information you use to access websites, apps and other services. Besides keeping your credentials, identity and sensitive data safe, a password manager can generate unique, strong passwords to ensure you aren’t reusing them across your services. With all the recent news of security breaches and identity theft, using unique passwords can go a long way to ensuring if one site gets hacked, your stolen password can’t be used on other sites.

[Android] FitzyTV – FREE Streaming TV Aggregator That Transforms Your Smartphone Into A Portable DVR

If you have a television subscription through your cable or satellite provider (including web-based ones such as DirecTV Now, LoCast, etc…) you definitely need this app (FitzyTV) to pull in the channels that you are subscribed to in one place. Typically, you have to download specific apps for specific channels. FitzyTV eliminates that and makes watching TV from your mobile device a pleasure; plus, you can Chromecast or Screenbeam what you are watching to the big screen.  I could not get over how fast this app loads the channels; plus, it pulled in all the channels I was entitled to from my cable provider. I found that FitzyTV also throws in some other channels as well, that are very good. It even tells you what is playing on each channel.

A big selling point to this app is the DVR function that will allow you to record your favorite programs. The DVR function will require a subscription. FitzyTV is the world’s first inexpensive cloud DVR solution. Just log in with your Cable/Satellite provider and FitzyTV will let you watch and record all of your favorite channels. Windows PC’s are great when everything is working as it should; but, when trouble comes along (and it will), there are some basic steps you can follow that most likely will help you resolve the issue. The web site, Addictive Tips, has put together 5 basic troubleshooting steps to fix Windows 10 problems that you should try. My favorite on the list is, “Restart System”. As a matter of fact, not only does this apply to just computers, this often applies to any type of electronic device. A complete shutdown and restart of the computer or device often will resolve the issue.

Hot Tech News: Some Chromebooks mistakenly declared themselves end-of-life last week | Ars Technica

A lot of Chromebook and Chromebox users don’t realize this, but all ChromeOS devices have an expiration date. Google’s original policy was for devices to be supported for five years, but the company has recently extended that time to 6.5 years. When your Chromebook or Chromebox approaches its built-in expiration date, it will warn you that it’s time to go buy a new device entirely. Not long after that, it will refuse to apply any further security or feature updates. In addition to leaving users vulnerable to unpatched security exploits, this means that constantly evolving services such as Gmail will eventually stop working entirely.

Today’s Tech News -Windows 10 Apps, 5G, and CPU vs GPU

Best Windows 10 apps this week

Three-hundred-and-fifty-one in a series. Welcome to this week’s overview of the best apps, games and extensions released for Windows 10 on the Microsoft Store in the past seven days. If you installed KB4512941 for Windows 10 version 1903 and noticed Cortana CPU usage going through the roof, you are not alone. Microsoft acknowledged the issue and plans to ship a patch later this month. As always, if I’ve missed an app or game that has been released this week that you believe is particularly good, let me know in the comments below or notify me via email.

Why you might actually buy a 5G phone in 2020

The big problem with 5G — or one of the big problems — is that it’s suffering the same issues LTE had when it first landed: It only works in a few markets, and most phones don’t support it. Worse, the few devices that do support it use external modems which aren’t built into the chipset, and like the early LTE phones, that means issues like decreased battery life. Thankfully, new chipsets with 5G support built-in are on the way, with Qualcomm announcing its own earlier this year.

What is the difference between CPU and GPU?

Difference between GPU and CPU

The CPU and GPU are two vital devices of the electronic computer system, but the functioning of both is entirely different from one another. CPU (central processing unit) is a microprocessor which is used to execute the instructions given by a program according to operations such as algorithms, arithmetic, logic, control, input, and output. However, on the other end, GPU (Graphics processing unit) is an internal device used to render an image on the computer screen. The foundation of CPU revolves around the low latency whereas GPU has to provide the high performance throughout.

One of the best guides I found to remove Trojans, Viruses, Worms and Malware from a Windows PC…

I have been messing with Windows-based computers since the mid to late 1980s. I am no expert and never attest to being one; but, I am adept to finding answers and solutions to computer problems through the power of the internet. As I continue to get up in age, my ability to retain what to do in various troubleshooting scenarios is not as sharp as it once was and much of that has to do with the fact that I am no longer working in IT (now retired). I still on occasions will try to help a neighbor or family member and most of those occasions it is to help bail them out from a browser hijack situation or situation where malware or a virus has infected their PC’s; but, in all reality I try to avoid this stuff like the plague (due that it can be quite a time-consuming process).

Today after assisting a neighbor, I started thinking, what is a good “current process” to follow and what software should one use to clean a Windows PC that has been infected? I went to the internet and came across a step-by-step guide that explains how to remove Trojans, Viruses, Worms and Malware from a Windows PC at a website called MalwareTips (see source link below)… Rick @ What’s On My PC

“Desktop vs. Microsoft Store Apps: Which Should You Download?”

by Ben Stagner @ MakeUseOf

What caught my eye in this article, by Ben Stagner @ MakeUseOf (see source link below) is that “many apps are available as both “traditional desktop apps” and modern apps in the Microsoft Store. I want to research this more to determine how many “traditional desktop apps” are actually promoted and how are they channeled to your computer if you select a “traditional desktop app”. Typically, “traditional desktop apps” are in a format where an “exe” (executable) is launched to install and to launch the software. I have found that the apps in the Microsoft Store are often large in file size compared to the “traditional desktop apps”. I would love to see Microsoft set up a store, similar to Google Play, that would serve as the gatekeeper to software applications for Windows. It would help improve security (I think)… Good article on Ben’s part… Rick @ What’s On My PC
