If You Love Baseball, Get Baseball Dash – Baseball MLB New Tab Page – Chrome Web Store

If you love Baseball and use the Google Chrome browser, I highly recommend “Baseball Dash”. The developer of “Baseball Dash” had contacted me to take a look at “Baseball Dash” and I have to say, I am very, very impressed.  You will not be disappointed…

“Baseball Dash”, after installed, will appear when you open a new browser tab. The first time I opened it I was prompted for my name and then my favorite Baseball Team. In my case, it was the Baltimore Orioles (not doing so good this year). Now when I open a new tab I get beautiful wallpaper background  (related to my team), a search box, the current weather, the time, the ability to buy tickets, current news on my Orioles, and a baseball schedule.  It doesn’t get any better than that; but, it does. I nearly missed this. On the left side of the page you will see “Links”. You can add your own links, which makes it convenient to load your favorite websites. To modify some of the settings, such as changing the search provider or turning on/off the weather or clock, you will find a “gear icon” in the bottom left corner. In the end, “Baseball Dash”, in my opinion, is one of those hidden gems on the internet that I just love coming across.

To get the full drift of what “Baseball Dash” is all about, click on the image below to see a screenshot of my computer screen.  Also, if interested in “Baseball Dash”, the source link is below. I highly recommend it…

Using The Fireshot Browser Extension To Email Web Content To My Gmail Note Taking Account

This is sort of a repost of two things that go hand-in-hand… I recently posted the article, “How To Use A Gmail Account To Create Your Own Customized Note-Taking App“; AND ALSO, back in December posted the article, “FireShot – Google Chrome Extension to Take Screenshots“.

My project of customizing and using a Gmail account solely as a note taking app is working better than I ever anticipated and better than the other note-taking apps I was using (such as Evernote, OneNote, and Simplenote). I don’t see me going back to anything else. Just too many benefits with using the Gmail platform…

One benefit that I am taking advantage of is the FREE version of the Fireshot browser extension which allows you to capture an entire web page, the visible part of a page or a specific part of a page (that you can select). Where the benefit to me with this is that Fireshot has an option where you can use Gmail to send whatever it is that you clipped (in the PDF, PNG or JPEG formats). I prefer the PDF format due that after the conversion is made, the links in the captured page are active. Many of the other note taking apps have browser extensions that allow you to clip web site text, pictures, pages, etc… I can now do the same (and better) by using Fireshot to email web content to my Gmail Note Taking account. Fireshot is available as an extension for Firefox, Chrome, Opera or IE.

I Don’t Like The Looks Of This (Evernote Changes Coming!)

I love Evernote; however, after I read this at the Android Authority, I may be going back to OneNote (or some other option)…

Early this morning, the lead devs of Evernote rose from their slumber. They stretched, yawned, looked around and then said to themselves, “You know what? We’ve almost never pissed anybody off. Let’s go ahead and get that squared away, shall we?” And so it came to pass that Evernote decided to increase the prices of both their Plus and Premium plans while at the same time heavily handicapping Basic users to encourage them to subscribe… READ MORE @ Android Authority

Watch Live American TV Online With USTVnow

We all envision the day that we can watch TV online without jumping through a bunch of hoops and give us the same ease of use that we are accustomed to when watching TV at home. USTVnow is an online service that is as close to this vision as it gets; that includes all major terrestrial stations that an American citizen or resident would normally receive. The FREE version gives you LIVE streaming access to stations such as ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC, PBS, and My9 in high resolution for 45 days. After the 45 days, it drops to low resolution. You have the option to upgrade to a paid plan, which includes the aforementioned networks; PLUS, additional top cable TV channels. I tried USTVnow; and, at high resolution, you cannot beat it. I haven’t experienced it at low resolution yet. After I discovered USTVnow, which has been streaming live TV on or before 2012, I was wondering How Is This Legal?  Anyhow, thought I would share this with you and let you decide…

MultCloud Upgraded To Include NEW Google Chrome App

Multcloud is a web based app where you can bring together multiple cloud drives into one place (such as Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Box, MEGA, SugarSync, Amazon Cloud Drive, Amazon S3 as well as FTP, WebDav, etc.).  I use Multcloud to quickly manage my cloud drives to access and transfer my files from one service to another. Today I was informed by AOMEI Technology that MultCloud was upgraded to include a NEW Google Chrome App

MultCloud

For home based personal account users, the FREE version of Multcloud is awesome when compared to other similar services.

You get (for FREE):

  • Access To the Online File Manager
  • Cross-File Transfer Capabilities
  • Unlimited Cloud Drive Quantity
  • A Data Transfer Cap of <10TB
  • General Transfer Speeds (which is sufficient for personal use)

If you need more, MultCloud offers a premium service that, in my opinion, cannot be beat.

Is 123456 A Good Password? — and MORE GREAT GEEK SQUEAK STUFF (#2016-04)

Is 123456 A Good Password? – Apparently many people think that it is. The password “123456” once again reigns as the most commonly used password, as it has since SplashData’s first list in 2011, demonstrating how people’s choices for passwords remain consistently risky. The second most risky password used is; you got it, is the word “password”. To see a listing of the worst passwords for 2015 — CLICK HERE… The whole purpose of this annual publishing of bad passwords is to encourage “we the people” to use stronger passwords in an effort to protect our personal data and to improve internet security.

Worst Passwords

One of the options that I use to protect myself, due to the numerous passwords that I use, is to use a password manager. The password manager that I use and strongly endorse is the S10 Password Vault which is available as a Windows install, portable app (on USB Drive), iPhone app, iPad app, and Android app. Many folks have a tendency to use one of the cloud-based password managers; however, I personally just do not feel comfortable with piping the passwords to my personal accounts into the cloud and not knowing (for absolutely sure) that it will always remain protected. With S10 Password Vault, I at least feel I have some level of control.

Geek Squeaks (#2015-41) FEATURING — Three WordPress.com Blogging Editors To Consider — and MORE GREAT STUFF

Three WordPress.com Blogging Editors To Consider – About a year ago I was at wits end in trying to find an editor that I could use at the desktop level to draft my blog articles. Today, if you are an avid blogger or want to give blogging a try, you need to know that there are several options available. Some of these editors support other blogging platforms, but what I am outlining here in this geek squeak article is editors that I know work with the WordPress.com platform (which is the online cloud based version of WordPress).

Wordpress

To keep this simple and allow you to do a quick read; three options to consider are:

ScribeFire – This editor is actually a browser extension (for Firefox and Chrome) that I use (and love). I think what sells me on this is that it is a basic editor, is fast, and dependable. The cons with ScribeFire is that, due to its’ simplicity, you have to do the final touches online (with the formatting) using the online WordPress editor. Otherwise, ScribeFire has worked for me. ScribeFire is a full-featured blog editor that integrates with your browser and lets you easily post to all of your blogs.

Open Live Writer – Remember the Windows version of Live Writer. I actually used that prior to ScribeFire; however, due to changes at Microsoft and the operating system upgrades the Microsoft version of Live Writer is basically a dead duck in the water. Due to numerous people using Live Writer, a group of talented contributors have turned what it used to be into an open source program called Open Live Writer. Open Live Writer is like Word for your blog. Open Live Writer is a powerful, lightweight blog editor that allows you to create blog posts, add photos and videos then publish to your website.

New WordPress.com Desktop App – WordPress.com must have heard our cries and know that in order to continue as one of the premiere blogging platforms there has to be options made available in order for people to remain within their blogging empire. I can tell you from being a blogger since 2008, WordPress is the way to go. With the new Windows and Mac based apps you can manage your sites, write and publish, and even customize your site and view stats from a dedicated app in your Windows Start Menu.

Happy Holidays To My Reader And To My Favorite Blogging Friends –  I want to wish my readers’ a safe and happy holiday season; AND, hope that you will continue to visit my blog. I love blogging about information technology, and have been doing so since 2008. During this journey there is a group of bloggers that have kept together in the virtual sense (even though none of us have physically met each other). Those bloggers, whom I have great respect for are Steve, Bill Paul, and Michael (and Jason). I wish you all a safe and happy holiday season…

Bluetooth Speaker Makes Great Gift – If you are looking to gift someone, consider a portable bluetooth speaker. Currently Anker has a new release at Amazon (that has become a best seller) called the Anker SoundCore. Right now the customer reviews on this little beast is very good. Points that standout with this speaker is battery life (24-hour / 500-song playtime powered by a built-in high capacity Li-ion battery) and Bluetooth 4.0 Technology (compatible with all Bluetooth-enabled devices. Instantly connect to your smartphone or tablet from up to 66 feet away. SoundCore reconnects automatically to the last device used. Built-in mic for hands-free calls.).  What you get is the Anker SoundCore Bluetooth speaker, Micro USB charging cable, welcome guide, and 18-month warranty).

Geek Squeaks (#2015-35) FEATURING — GEGeek NOW On Facebook — and MORE GREAT STUFF

GEGeek NOW On Facebook – The motherload of all tech sites, GEGeek, is now featuring their GEGeek Tech Toolkit on Facebook. The toolkit, available through donation at the main GEGeek web site, is a complete collection of over 400 tech related FREE programs and suites (all available from a menu launch utility). If you are an information technology professional the GEGeek website and the GEGeek Toolkit should automatically become part of your mindset. Mike and Jason at GEGeek have gone to great lengths to review, collect, and maintain the information (and toolkit) that is available. Jason recently joined Mike to assist in maintaining the motherload. I personally thank both of them (and I encourage you to do the same). After you donate to acquire the toolkit, you are then entitled to the upgrades (which occur on a regular basis).

WordWeb Upgraded To Support Windows 10WordWeb has been a mainstay on my computer for years. It is a very useful and comprehensive one-click English thesaurus and dictionary for Windows. It can be used to look up words from almost any program, showing definitions, synonyms and related words. It includes pronunciations and usage examples, and has helpful spelling and sounds-like links. I especially like the one click lookup where you hold the CTRL key and right mouse click on a word to get the definition. WordWeb can also be installed as a portable app. You will be prompted for that option after you run the install file. Also, if you like WordWeb and use Google Chrome, be sure to download their WordCaptureX browser extension…  NOTE: WordWeb has been added to the What’s On My PC download page under the FREE Software swarm.

Geek Squeaks (#2015-28) FEATURING — NEW Gmail Features — and MORE GREAT STUFF

NEW Gmail Feature – Gmail now has a built in feature that gives you the ability to EASILY block a nuisance sender (via the web interface and on Android) and the ability to unsubscribe from various services (on Android only). I am especially eager to test the unsubscribe option…  You can read more (and get a visual of how this works) at the official Gmail blog

Just Added “Feedly” To The Downloads Page – Feedly is an RSS (Really Simply Syndicate) Reader that I use to connect to the blogs and news sites that I am interested in. What RSS allows you to do is subscribe to a sites’ RSS feed.  The reader then pulls down the content into the reader (from the sites that you are subscribed to). RSS allows you to automatically pull down content from numerous sites into one place where you can then read it (just like a newspaper).  If you are not using RSS, then you do not know what you are missing. Feedly does a nice job of this and gives you a ton of options.  I currently use the web based version of Feedly and the Android version of Feedly  …

An Exhaustive Comparison Of The Best Online File Storage Services

There are so many online file storage services these days that you can find yourself lost in the herd. To help you narrow down your choices, I recommend that you visit I Love Free Software where they have a table posted that is an exhaustive comparison of the 15 best FREE cloud storage services (i.e. Dropbox, Google Drive, Box, OneDrive, Tresorit, DataBagg, Bitcasa, ASUS WebStorage, IDrive, MEGA, pCloud, Inbox Storage, Copy.com, SpiderOak, and FlipDrive).

Cloud Storage Services

I am very familiar with everyone of these services and can tell you that the cross comparison table that I Love Free Software has compiled is of great value; especially, if you do not know what services to use.

What I am finding, even with myself, I have signed up with many of these services and before I knew it I was losing track of what I had stored and where.  My recommendation, is keep it to one or two services, focus on organizing your files and focus on encrypting any sensitive files that you intend to store online.

Raise Money With gofundme For The Things That Matter To You Most

Recently my work Director (and close friend) and her husband had a major setback where their home was completely destroyed by fire (see here). To assist getting them back on their feet, another Director that I work for came up with the innovated idea of using an online crowdsource fund raising site, called gofundme (to help get the word out and to help raise and manage the funds that were received).

A goal of $1k has been set for this particular fund raiser; and, if you are interested in helping out CLICK HERE gofundme is a perfectly safe way to help others out (including yourself) in situations where life throws you a curve ball.

gofundme

To get a few things out of the way about using this type of service:

First –  A small handling and management fee is charged to recipient of the funds and not the donors.

Second — You can setup a gofundme page to collect for other people, as was done for the family that I know.

Third — Use a credit card to make the donation.

The beauty of using gofundme is that it is tied in closely with Facebook where you can share information about the situation and that funds are being collected for whatever the purpose may be. You can also use the communication power of the internet; such as email, blogging, other social networking sites to post a link about the fund raiser.

Crowdfunding.com ranks gofundme, as of the date of this posting, as the #1 top crowdfunding site by Alexa (which analyzes the internet traffic to the site).

Yesterday I featured pCloud’s Transfer Service; but, what I did not know is that pCloud is also an online file storage service that has features that some of the other contenders do not. After you signup for the service you are given 10GB’s of free space to store and share your files. At that point you can earn more space by completing various tasks and tutorials that they have set up. I am currently working toward upgrading my space by inviting other users. For every user that I invite, I get 1GB of additional space (up to 20GBs) and the person signing up also gets a 1GB of space.

If interested in taking a look at pCloud,

sign up and we’ll both get some FREE space.

pCloud

What is pCloud? pCloud is the right place to store and backup all your data – photos, videos, documents and large files without worrying about file size limit. All your files are stored safe in the cloud and available wherever you go, on any device – iOS, Android, Desktop, Web. All your files are immediately synchronized between your computer, your pCloud and all mobile devices and you have instant access to all updates you make.

pCloud has the typical features and options that you will see with some of the other online file storage services, but there are some features that make pCloud stand out:

  • You can upload as large files as your storage space allows you.
  • You can Choose a folder, go to options and click Get Upload Link. You will receive an unique Upload link. You can give that link to anyone who needs to send you a file and he/she can upload it directly to your cloud, even if the person doesn’t have a pCloud account.
  • You can (if pCloud installed) on your mobile devices tell pCloud to automatically backup all files you have on your phone to your pCloud account.
  • You can keep a copy of your important pCloud files on your phone by marking them as your favorite(s). You want to access certain files from your pCloud account even when you don’t have internet connection, you can just mark them as Favorite in the mobile application and a copy of those files will be stored locally on your mobile device and the changes to those files will be synchronized on every modification.
  • You can backup files from Dropbox, Facebook, Instagram and Picasa to your pCloud account.

Spice Up Your Documents With CopyPasteCharacters

Have you ever seen documents or emails where someone has “somehow” inserted special characters or symbols in the document and you are wondering, “Where are these symbols on the keyboard?”. These symbols or characters are referred to in the geek world as “alt codes”. These symbols and characters are keyboard generated by pressing the ALT key in combination with numbers on the NUMBER PAD (on your keyboard). I recently posted an article about “ALT codes”, titled, “Using the Alt Key on your Keyboard to Make Special Characters” that leads you to a good visual source on how to apply these codes.

The problem you run into with these codes, without a visual reference, is remembering what “ALT” keys to apply to generate a symbol (or character).  Recently I found a simple cloud based solution that specializes in allowing you to easily copy and paste ALT code type symbols (and characters) into documents, emails, forums, etc…  The site is called CopyPasteCharacter.com.

CopyPasteCharacter.com

Once you get to the site you will find an array of various symbols (and characters) and if you open up an account you can even save and create your own character set. To use a character, you simply “left mouse click” on a symbol (or character) and the symbol (or character) will automatically be copied to the clipboard on your computer. At that point, what I do is left mouse click, select “paste” from the menu and the symbol (or character) will be inserted into the document. ❤

Microsoft Office Online and Dropbox Are Shaking Hands

If you follow the tech news you will know that Microsoft and Dropbox had earlier established a partnership with a goal to make it easier to work with your Microsoft Office applications from Dropbox. This goal is now to the point where the integration between Dropbox on the web and Office Online is a reality.

Now, when working in Office Online you can add your Dropbox account to easily browse, open and edit Office files with Office Online. You can also create new files in Office Online, and save them directly to your Dropbox.

The same integration is available from Dropbox in a web browser. You can now access Office Online directly from the file you are viewing. Just click the Open button when you’re previewing a Word, PowerPoint or Excel file from Dropbox on the web, and you can edit the file right from your browser using Office Online. Google Keep – Keeps Getting Better

Recently I posted an article [click here], that gave you some insight about Google Keep and how it has become one of my favorite apps. If you do not know about Google Keep I encourage you to read the article. Google Keep has become a very popular note keeping app that is available on the web (in your browser) and as an app on your mobile devices.

Google Keep

This past week Google added two NEW features to Google Keep. The one feature, that was definitely on my wish list, is that you now have the ability to add labels to your notes. This is a very powerful feature that gives you the ability to organize and categorize your notes. The second NEW feature is the recurring reminders where you can configure notes to repeatedly remind you of matters so that you never miss a beat.

As the title of this blog post suggest, “Google Keep – Keeps Getting Better”… I can’t wait to see what Google has up their sleeve in the future for this very popular and useful application.

To help get you started, Google Keep for the Google Chrome Browser is available [here] and Google Keep for the Android tablet and smartphone platforms is available [here] …

Extend The Functionality Of Evernote With CardDesk

If you are an Evernote user you may want to take a look at the new cloud app called CardDesk (which is currently in Beta). Signup for the account at CardDesk is FREE and you have nothing to lose.

CardDesk

In a nutshell CardDesk is a web application that ties in nicely with your Evernote account to give you a visual desktop organizer for your Evernote notes. The notes give the appearance of index cards that can be moved around and arranged on any number of virtual screens or desktops (where you can select from different backgrounds). You can edit a note by double clicking on the header of the note.  Nice concept…

Visualize The News In A Treemap Algorithm Format

Are you a news junkie? If so, Newsmap and Newsola are two online (browser based) news apps that collects the news from Google News, then presents that news in a treemap algorithm format. From what I can tell Newsmap is the older of the two; and, that Newsola is based on Newsmap. Newsola seems to load faster than Newsmap and has an option where you can leave up the app on your screen and set it to auto-refresh (as a constant news feed).

Both sites use the treemap visualization format where the more important the news story, the bigger the block. Both sites feature color coded blocks to categorize the news.

Use Jolicloud Drive To Manage Your Online Drive Accounts In One Place

Some of you may have heard of the Jolicloud OS that originally established its’ roots back in 2009 with the intent of using the infinite power of the cloud to pull all your online apps together in a very nice interface that could be accessed in your web browser. The original concept (back then) was actually ahead of its’ time.  Since that time, the Jolicloud OS has ceased to exist; however, the developers at Jolicloud have now given us Jolicloud Drive that runs in your web browser.

Jolicloud Drive

Jolicloud Drive is a new way to manage your online storage, from some of the most reputable sources out there (such as Dropbox Copy, Box, Google Drive); ALL, in one place. In my testing of Jolicloud Drive, I found that setting up the various online drive accounts you may have with Jolicloud Drive was very easy to do. I also found, compared to some of the other similar type of cloud apps out there, Jolicloud Drive is a fast loader that has a built in file viewer and has file sharing capability. The only drawback with the FREE account is that you cannot copy or move files from one drive account to the other; but, in my case I can live without that feature.

Also, if you do decide to use Jolicloud Drive, dig a little deeper in the interface and you will find Jolicloud Library (that is currently in beta) where you can pull in a variety of services (such as YouTube, Feedly, Flickr, etc..); ALL, in one place. I will be following Jolicloud on both of these online cloud app services…

Try this easy and powerful online photo editing application…

I have tried and tested numerous online photo (graphic) editors and the one that I am finding that is tried, tested and true is iPiccy… This editor appears to have been around awhile, with my last review being back in 2011 when it was in beta. Back then iPiccy sported over 30 creative editing tools and now it sports over 110 creative editing tools. Since then iPiccy has matured quite nicely.

What I really like about this editor is that it runs very nicely in the browser and has an exhaustive list of editing tools that is normally found in some of the higher end software based editors that you would normally install on your computer. Give it a try and I think you will be impressed. iPiccy is FREE and registration is not required (unless to want to take advantage of photo layers and the collages).

Brother Creative Center – FREE Online Desktop Publishing Suite

I recently decided to go with a laser printer from Brother (Model: HL- 2270DW) to meet my printing needs and to save money on what I was spending for inkjet printer cartridges. While checking out their web site I came across an online desktop publishing suite, that they maintain, called Brother Creative Center that is completely FREE.

Their are two project sections to the Brother Creative Center: Business Center and Home Center. Both have numerous templates to get you started and both have the ability to save whatever projects you are working on. Really nice setup on something that you don’t hear much about…

Air Explorer – A Windows Based Software Application To Manage Your Online File Storage

Typically when we sign up for online file storage we are often given option to download software that will allow you to sync files locally with the online account. The problem with that, as in my case, I have multiple online accounts with multiple providers and do not want to burden down my computer with numerous software installs from these different providers.

To remedy this issue and to give full control in the management of your files in the cloud, at multiple (popular) providers, check out Air Explorer.

Air Explorer

Air Explorer is a Windows based program that appears to be relatively new (at least to me) that has the ability to connect to multiple online cloud servers. Air Explorer currently supports OneDrive, Google Drive, Box, Dropbox, Mega, Copy, Mediafire, Yandex, and WebDAV. When I tested Air Explorer it effortlessly connected to each of my online accounts and appeared to be quite fast.

Air Explorer Interface

What I like about the Air Explorer concept is that I can centrally and directly manage (move, copy, delete, share) my files and can even copy files from one provider to another provider. Air Explorer provides a dual paned interface that gives you the ability to easily perform the various file operations.

Features:

Optionally Air Explorer can encrypt your files when you upload them to the cloud

Sets up multiple accounts from the same server

You can synchronize folders between any cloud or your computer

Copy/Paste between cloud servers

Pause and continue uploads and downloads

Air Exlorer can share files

Centralize search of your files across all the clouds

Quick Note – The Brain Fart Class Of Note Keeping

In the heavyweight class of note keeping apps, we have Evernote and OneNote that are exceptional in that they can perform a higher level of note keeping that are best suited when researching something or we want to store something of importance (for future reference).

In the lightweight class of note keeping we have Google Keep, that is exceptional in that you can keep notes in a manner for which we keep sticky notes (for grocery lists, to do lists, reminders, etc…), that are at a lower level of importance, but we feel necessary in order for us to exist.

Each of these heavy weight and light weight apps can be quickly accessed from all of our computing platforms (such as the Windows and the Android platforms); but, did you know that there is another class of note keeping called the “brain fart” class of notekeeping?

The brain fart a class of notekeeping is where you need to make notes quickly (on the fly), as they come to mind and are only around for the short term. This is the class of note keeping where another note keeping app called Quick Note comes into the picture.  Quick Note is like having a piece of paper and pencil with you at all times; and, in appearance, Quick Note looks just like the canary yellow ruled line notepads that we all have used at one time or another.

Quick Note

Quick Note is installed as a Google Chrome App that you can make a shortcut to so that your Quick Note notepad is easily and quickly accessible at all times. To use Quick Note you need to sign up for a diigo.com account so that you never lose your notes, as they are then synchronized (and stored) to your diigo.com account.

Quick Note is especially designed for lightweight note-taking. You can use it as a simple notepad,  scratchpad, clipboard, or to record todo lists.

★ Quick to add and edit ~ Add note in the app or from right-click menu

★ Quick to search ~ Instant search for all notes

★ Quick to access ~ One-click to access your notes

★ Sync to cloud and access your notes anywhere

Nimbus Screenshot – Probably The Best Browser Screen Capture Extension In The Google Chrome Store

As a blog writer it is necessary to have a good screen capture application available. Probably the best screen capture extension in the Google Chrome Store right now is Nimbus Screenshot: Capture and Annotate.

Nimbus Screenshot: Capture and Annotate

Nimbus Screenshot fits in well with ScribeFire, that is also a Chrome browser extension, that I use to draft my blog articles. With both of these extensions in place, all articles that I compose are performed directly in my browser (Google Chrome and/or Chromium) making my writing experience much more pleasant, efficient, and faster.

Nimbus Screenshot gives you the ability to capture a whole Web page (snipping tool), a part of it or the whole browser window. Built in is an optional editor, with a very user-friendly interface, where you can edit your captures, crop your images; AND, add text (or comments), lines, arrows, circles, rectangles, etc… When done you can save your screenshots to your Google Drive or Nimbus account. The free Nimbus account allows you to save up to 100 mbs of data a month.

As a side note, which I need to explore further; Nimbus also offers, in a addition to the Google Chrome browser extension, a screen capture app for the Windows, Android, and Firefox platforms.

Convert Your Favorite Videos From YouTube, Dailymotion, Vevo, and Clipfish to MP3, MP4 And More…

Looking for a way to convert your favorite music videos to MP3? Look no further…  I have been on the hunt for an online YouTube video to MP3 converter and found quite a few; HOWEVER, I finally settled with a FREE service called convert2mp3.net – Online Video Converter. This service is cloud based, which means everything can be done to make the conversion by using your web browser, which means “no software to install”. I think the things that impressed me the most with convert2mp3.net is the built in search component, how fast the conversion takes place and that the end result of the conversion is excellent; PLUS, unlike many of the other services I tried, there are no surprise pop-up ad pages (that looked pretty shady to me).

convert2mp3

Search for a video on YouTubeDailymotionVevo or Clipfish and copy & paste the link (URL) of the video in the first box, select the file type and press “convert”. Alternatively you can search for a Youtube video directly. Just enter the video title in the second form and press “search”

Google Chrome MP3 Player App – Trifling Trivial Worthless Rubbishy Player (TTWR player)

Once I get stuck on something, I am on it until I’ve exhausted it or I’m exhausted (which ever comes first). For some odd reason, I have been on a MP3 music kick; especially being focused on web based converters and web based players.

Today I happened across a Google Chrome App, called Trifling Trivial Worthless Rubbishy Player (TTWR player), that appears to be VERY NEW at the Google Chrome Store. What is unique about TTWR player is that does not pull music from the cloud (the internet); instead, it pulls the music from your local drive(s) using a web Google Chrome browser based user interface. The interface is minimalistic and easy to navigate. Simply browse for a music folder on your computer and TTWRP will begin playing your music. You can do a song loop, a song list loop or song list shuffle. Pretty cool idea for a browser based player that ultimately makes playing your locally stored music an easy task. I am interested in seeing this app being developed further and feel this is a definite plus for people who have Google Chromebooks (click here to see a Chromebook). Again, this appears to be a very new app (so expect a glitch or two).

Create Online Music Playlists And Share Them With Your Friends (Without Breaking Any Laws???)

Create Online Music Playlists And Share Them With Your Friends (Without Breaking Any Laws???)… That is what YOUZEEK is claiming on their “About” page.

YOUZEEK is a FREE online (cloud based) music application. With YOUZEEK, you can play music, discover or re-discover artists and bands, find music by country and by genre. According to their “About” page, YOUZEEK and its users, keep it legal, by not storing any copyrighted content and relies on legal sources such as YouTube.

YOUZEEK

I am still learning to navigate the YOUZEEK site, and do have some unanswered questions; however, what I am seeing is awesome (like making selections, creating playlists, watching the corresponding music videos, a music room to instantly share music with others, etc…). To get full benefit of YOUZEEK, it is best to set up an account (which is FREE).

YOUZEEK is available through your web browser (at youzeek.com); available as a Google Chrome App; and, available as an app on the following mobile platforms (Android, Amazon Kindle Fire, Apple iPhone, and Apple iPad).

Get A Great Deal On Microsoft Office 365 Personal

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] Get A Great Deal On Microsoft Office 365 Personal– A year ago I would have told you that Microsoft was behind the eight ball and was not in tune with the current devices (such as tablets, smartphones, etc.) which are supported by cloud computing. A year later I am seeing a new Microsoft that is quickly rebounding and doing things that I never thought I would see them do.

One example (of late) is their pricing model changes and incentives with Microsoft Office 365.  If you do not know what Microsoft Office 365 is, let me break it down in one sentence. Microsoft Office 365 is an online subscription service to Microsoft Office where you pay an annual fee to keep Office on your computer (and other devices).

Microsoft Office 365

There are quite a few pricing models for Microsoft Office 365, but the latest deal that jumped out at me was Microsoft Office 365 Personal where Microsoft has thrown in a Terabyte of online storage and 60 Skype minutes for $6.99 a month (or $69.99 a year at a 16% savings).

Office 365 Personal enables you to install the latest full desktop version of Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook, on 1 PC or Mac, in addition to 1 Windows tablet or iPad — so you can use all the features offline as well as online. You can also install Office on multiple smartphones.

What is making this sweet is the terabyte of online storage (and the Skype minutes); PLUS, the satisfaction of knowing that your version of Microsoft Office is always up to date.

Periodically Change The Background Image On Your Computer (like every hour or every day)

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] Periodically Change The Background Image On Your Computer (like every hour or every day) – You may have figured out that in Windows 7 and Windows 8 you have the ability to setup a screensaver that will display your photos and images on your computer as a slideshow (when the computer goes idle for a preset period of time).  The problem with this is that it is limited in what you can do. Actually screensavers are really a thing of the past (that was designed to save your screen from burn in).

If you really want something that I consider an awesome piece of software, that is periodically updated (and improved), I encourage you to take a look at John’s Background Switcher (aka: JBS).

John’s Background Switcher

What does John’s Background Switcher do?  John best describes it as this: “JBS sits in your system tray (down by the clock) and changes your background at the time interval of your choosing. You tell it where to get pictures from and how to show them – maybe you just want to see one photo at a time or maybe you’d like to see a ‘Snapshot Scrapbook‘ of photos thrown across your desktop. It’s up to you and you never know what’s coming next!”

Take a look at John’s Background Switcher; and, that dull boring computer background will be transformed into a beautiful display that makes good use of your images (and photos) with the ability to pull images from various sources on the internet.  Get it here (for FREE)!

Split A PDF File Into One Or More Pieces

@ PDFSplit

I ran into a situation where I had a PDF document (actually a book), where I only needed certain page ranges. I went on the hunt and found an online (cloud) based application called PDFSplit. With PDFSplit you select a PDF file from your computer, your Google Drive account or your DropBox account. You can extract specific page ranges or you can break each page down into separate files. I found PDF Splitter to work wonderfully. Once the split has occurred you simply download your file.

Cryptolocker: How to avoid getting infected
and what to do if you are

@ ComputerWorld

I know I posted information yesterday about Cryptolocker, but this is extremely important. If you become victim of Cryptolocker, you are at high odds of losing your personal files. I have never seen anything like this and I feel, the more I let people know, the better. If you see the below graphic show up on your PC displaying that your personal files are encrypted, you have been nailed!

image

Cryptolocker comes in the door through social engineering. Usually the virus payload hides in an attachment to a phishing message, one purporting to be from a business copier like Xerox that is delivering a PDF of a scanned image, from a major delivery service like UPS orFedEx offering tracking information or from a bank letter confirming a wire or money transfer… READ MORE

Today’s Geek Squeaks – October 10, 2013

A summary of Today’s Geek Squeaks:

Squeak #1 – (My Streaming Radio Favorite): Can’t explain it, but got up this morning (at 5 AM) and started the day off with some classic rock. My favorite online music service, which is a search engine of sorts, is RadioTuna. You can even download their desktop player app or embed their radio widget into your site (SEE BELOW);

Squeak #2 – (Arranging and Pinning Tabs In Google Chrome): Decided today to find you a short tutorial on how to arrange and pin tabs in Google Chrome. Many folks are unaware of this feature which can be quite handy. For example, the RadioTuna site that I mentioned in Squeak #1, I simply pinned the site so that I could listen to my music and would not accidentally close the site’s tab (SEE BELOW);

Squeak #3 – (A Computer Cleanup Option): TCAT Shelbyville has a quick tutorial on how to take advantage of a recent Microsoft update that could give you between 2 to 6GB’s of additional free space (SEE BELOW); and,

Squeak #4 – (A Neat Way To Dock A Bare SATA Drive ): An external dock that provides a convenient and direct connection from a SATA (SATA, SATA II, SATA III) HDD/SSD to your PC or Notebook (SEE BELOW)…

How To Pin and Arrange Tabs In Google Chrome

@ Google

You can easily rearrange the tabs at the top of your browser window.

To reorder your tabs, click a tab and drag it to different position along the top of the browser window.

Rearrange tabs

To move a tab into a new window, click and drag the tab down past the address bar. You’ll see a thumbnail of the tab you’re moving. Similarly, to move the tab to a different window, click and drag the tab from its original window to the top of the destination window. The tab should pop in automatically.

Drag tabs

If you don’t want a particular tab to be moving around, you can pin the tab to the left of your browser window. Right-click the tab and select Pin tab. You can tell that a tab is pinned if it’s smaller in size and displays just the site’s icon.

Besides the tips listed above, you can take advantage of many keyboard shortcuts available for windows and tabs in Google Chrome.

Today’s Geek Squeaks – September 14, 2013

A summary of Today’s Geek Squeaks:

Squeak #1 – (NEW Evernote Web Clipper): I have tried every note taking and note keeping application out there and I am convinced that Evernote is the best. Recently, the developers of Evernote released the NEW Evernote Web Clipper 6 for Google Chrome that features a completely re-done interface (see below);

Squeak #2 – (Outlook.com Finally Supports IMAP): IMAP is a mail protocol that allows email clients to access messages stored on a remote mail server. The beauty of IMAP is that everything stays in sync no matter which device you use. For example, any change you make on your inbox on one device appears on the other devices. Adding the IMAP protocol, by Microsoft, to their new web based mail is a big step. See below “how to” take advantage of IMAP with Outlook.com – -formerly Hotmail (see below);

Squeak #3 – (Win +X Menu Editor):  If you hit the Win key plus the X key on your keyboard in Windows 8 a menu will appear (in the bottom left corner of the screen). You can also get to that same menu by going to the bottom left corner of the screen and when the Start Screen thumbnail appears, right mouse click. This menu is pretty handy; however, there are no built in ways to edit or manage the menu – – UNTIL NOW (see below); AND,

Squeak #4 – (Nice Looking Card Reader):  In to computer builds? Then don’t forget to add a card reader to the build list (see below)…
