Check Out Jigsaw Explorer – Online Jigsaw Puzzles

If you enjoy working on jigsaw puzzles, you need to check out “Jigsaw Explorer” (that runs in your web browser). What I found is that once you load a puzzle, select the number of pieces you want; then, go to full screen (to eliminate the ads loading). You can also upload your own images and what I discovered by doing that is that you can rotate the pieces by using the wheel on your mouse. To lift and move a piece, simply click on the piece using your mouse. You can even create puzzles and send/share them with others. Really nice online jigsaw app. Great app for Chromebooks, as well.

Don’t Overlook Google’s FREE Drawing and Graphic Editor

Anyone that uses any of the online web-based Google Products, such as Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides most likely have overlooked Google’s version of their drawing and graphics editor (called Google Drawings). I currently use Google Drawings to typically make graphic postings on my blog and other social media sites such as Facebook. To give you some good insight into Google Drawings I came across the tutorial below to help you get started. Some points I do want to make is that Google Drawings is very easy to learn and use; that you can do some pretty neat graphics related tasks such as creating logos, signs, backgrounds, etc.; and, it integrates well with Google Docs, Sheets and Slides.

Convert Microsoft Publisher Files to PDF Free Online

Just experienced a situation where someone sent me a Microsoft Publisher file as an email attachment. Guess what, most people, including myself, do not have Publisher installed and when using my Chromebook there is no conversion option available. To remedy this issue, I went to a website called “Convert Publisher to PDF” and within minutes, after uploading the publisher file and downloading the converted pdf file, I could see the contents of the file. Also appears you can save the converted file to Google Drive, Box, and OneDrive.

start.me – A Modern Day Bookmark Manager (and Homepage App)

(start.me) is, by far, my favorite homepage browser app. It is the first thing I see when I load my browser on my computer.

I am big into customization and “start.me” has numerous options available to make your homepage shine the way you want it to (with various widgets, page backgrounds, etc…) Not only that, it is a modern-day bookmark manager with browser extensions, that gives you the power to save your bookmarks on the fly. Also, there is a mobile app available that you can load on your phone so that you can take your bookmarks with you.

If interested, the source link below will help get you started; plus, take a minute to watch the video.

We spend a lot of time on the Internet. We browse the web to discover. Or we search for something specific, like a delicious recipe or a motivational article. start.me’s bookmark manager lets you easily save and organize all of your favorite webpages on a customizable dashboard. Using start.me, you’ll spend less time digging for links and more time browsing them.

Preview What Is In Your (USPS) Postal Mailbox From Your Computer or Smartphone

The United States Postal Service has a service available to you that allows you to digitally preview your mail and manage your packages that are scheduled to arrive soon! Informed Delivery allows you to view greyscale (scanned) images of the exterior, address side of letter-sized mailpieces and track packages in one convenient location.

For example, I used “Informed Delivery” to see what was is in my mailbox before I go to my mailbox. Sort of scary in a way; but, is a good way to make sure you have received important mail.

Reeddit – Minimal, elastic and read-only web app client for Reddit

Elastic, minimal, mobile-first and read-only Reddit web-app client. If you are a follower of Reddit, then you know how “not user friendly” their web page is. This web-app client, called Reeddit, solves the ugliness by cleaning up the interface to only show you the most important information from the posts and comments. Basically, in a nutshell, it is a “read-only” application that does not allow voting, points or commenting. In my case, when it comes to Reddit, I am not into that anyway; however, Reddit is one of those popular sites where you are liable to see, read and learn anything. From what I researched, Reedit is an open-sourced application (on GitHub).

If you do not know what Reddit is: Reddit is an American social news aggregation, web content rating, and discussion website. Registered members submit content to the site such as links, text posts, and images, which are then voted up or down by other members. [source: Wikipedia]

Chrome Music Lab – Hands-On Experiments

Are you a music lover? If so, make sure you check out the Chrome Music Lab where you can have some fun with the hands-on experiments (such as Song Maker, Rhythm, Spectogram, Chords, Sound Waves, Appregios, Melody Maker and more…).  All of these apps can be run straight from your web browser and no account sign-in is required.

What is Chrome Music Lab? Chrome Music Lab is a website that makes learning music more accessible through fun, hands-on experiments.

What can it be used for? Many teachers have been using Chrome Music Lab as a tool in their classrooms to explore music and its connections to science, math, art, and more. They’ve been combining it with dance and live instruments.

Can I use it to make my own songs? Yes. Check out the Song Maker experiment, which lets you make and share your own songs.

Inoreader – RSS Feed Reader For Power Users (best of the best)

Most people are unaware of RSS (Rich Site Summary) and are missing out on a really powerful way to retrieve the latest content from the sites you may be interested in without having to physically visit the site. Most sites offer RSS feeds and to retrieve those feeds you need a RSS “Feed Reader”. Don’t let this all scare you away, it is very easy to learn and use. You will not regret it. I personally use a feed reader called Inoreader to pull down news and information from hundreds of sites that are of my interest. For example, CNN and Fox news have RSS Feeds. Instead of going to their sites, I simply get their RSS Feed address(es) and enter into my Inoreader RSS Feed Reader to pull in the latest content. That is only two sites I used as an example. I have over a hundred sites where I do the same.

I have tried many RSS feed readers; and, I can tell you that Inoreader is the best of the best. It also available on many platforms (such as on the Web, Windows, Android, Google Chrome App, and iOS). I have Inoreader installed on every device and computer I own and can tell you it seamlessly will synchronize your RSS Feeds no matter which device you use.  If you have a Facebook or Google account, you are one step away from setting up your own Inoreader account.

Inoreader – One place to keep up with all your information sources. Rely on powerful free search, full archive of your subscriptions. Monitor specific keywords, save pages from the web and subscribe to social media feeds.

One of the most overlooked Google Doc Apps is Google Drawings

One of the most overlooked Google Doc applications is Google Drawings. The main reason for this is that Google Drawings is not readily available in the listing of the other Google Docs  (like Docs, Sheets and Slides). What I am finding is that Google Drawings is a powerful (easy to use) graphic designer that can be used for multi-purposes (i.e. blog postings, signs, cards, facebook posts, flowcharts, organizational charts, website wireframes, mind maps, etc…).

As I mentioned, it is not easy to find or get to. Below is step-by-step on how to get to Google Drawings. Once you are there, bookmark it in your web browser.  You can also get to it, if you are a Google Chrome browser user, by going to the Google Chrome Store and downloading the Google Drawings app [here].

Have you reached your Google Drive Quota???

As with any online file storage site, you are assigned a quota (the threshold that is reached when your online drive is full). TechRepublic posted a “how to” article that will show you how to check your quota on your Google Drive. You will need to be logged into your Google account for these tips to work. What is nice about this is that you can determine where the spacehogs are with these tips…

MultCloud Upgraded To Include NEW Google Chrome App

Multcloud is a web based app where you can bring together multiple cloud drives into one place (such as Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Box, MEGA, SugarSync, Amazon Cloud Drive, Amazon S3 as well as FTP, WebDav, etc.).  I use Multcloud to quickly manage my cloud drives to access and transfer my files from one service to another. Today I was informed by AOMEI Technology that MultCloud was upgraded to include a NEW Google Chrome App

MultCloud

For home based personal account users, the FREE version of Multcloud is awesome when compared to other similar services.

You get (for FREE):

  • Access To the Online File Manager
  • Cross-File Transfer Capabilities
  • Unlimited Cloud Drive Quantity
  • A Data Transfer Cap of <10TB
  • General Transfer Speeds (which is sufficient for personal use)

If you need more, MultCloud offers a premium service that, in my opinion, cannot be beat.

Labeley

Aside from the sleek, user-friendly layout, Labeley comes with a variety of design options that make label creation easy and fun. Users can choose between different:

– label shapes
– borders
– ribbons and graphics
– colors and fonts

or they can revamp their own design by simply uploading it from their personal computers. The best thing is, they don’t even need to create an account if they want to remain anonymous.

How To Watch YouTube In TV Mode On Your Computer

… and, MORE GREAT GEEK SQUEAK STUFF (#2016-015)

This week’s blog posting on “How To Watch YouTube In TV Mode On Your Computer” is actually a very easy posting for me. To go into the YouTube TV Mode on your computer, simply open your browser and type in the following URL: https://www.youtube.com/tv … That is all there is to it. Once you are there there are three very easy keyboard commands you need to know. By hitting the “G” key on your keyboard, a guide will slide out from the left side of the screen. To perform a YouTube search, simply hit the “S” key on your keyboard. If you need to go back to the Home Screen, simply hit the “ESC” key on your keyboard. You can also easily navigate YouTube.com/TV with your mouse (pay special attention to the sidebar on the left side of the screen).

YouTube TV

YouTube.com/TV is also called YouTube Leanback and can also be launched by entering the URL of https://www.youtube.com/leanback. This mode of watching YouTube, which is commonly not known (or is forgotten about), is especially beneficial for those who have the larger computer monitors or have a media center set up on a large screen TV.

Bet You Never Saw This Before – I have been looking around for a bluetooth capable mouse for my Android tablet and came across a mouse with a bluetooth speaker built into it. It is called the Aerb® Wireless Bluetooth Speaking Mouse . I haven’t decided whether to splurge for this (just to have something different); but, I have never seen anything like it.  A mouse with a speaker built into it is a really neat concept; especially, for a tablet or smartphone.

Geek Squeaks (#2015-39) FEATURING — Put All Your Cloud Drives In One Place — and MORE GREAT STUFF

Put All Your Cloud Drives In One Place – Thought I would share with you an online service that I use called MultCloud (by AOMEI). This service provides a FREE option (as well as a PAID option) that can help you easily (and safely) manage multiple cloud storage services. For example, I currently manage online drives from Box, Copy, Google, Dropbox, Mediafire and OneDrive ALL from MultCloud. In that mix I also use MultCloud to manage two Google Drives. What MultCloud does is allow you to pull all of those services and manage those services from one location. MultCloud FREE features an online file manager, cross-cloud file transfers, and a countless number of cloud drives. The file transfer speeds for the FREE version are slower than the PAID version and there is a monthly data cap on the FREE version (which is quite high in my opinion). For normal everyday use, the FREE version has worked for me and in the end (after I give this a run for awhile), I may opt to go to the PAID version.

Use Your Android Phone (or Tablet) To Convert An Image To Text – Ever heard of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) where you scan a paper document and OCR software that is engineered to recognize the characters in the document then translate (or convert) it into an electronic text version (that you can then edit, insert into documents, etc…)? There is an OCR version for your Android Phone or Tablet called Text Fairy that has the ability to scan for and extract text from an image. From my testing, I found Text Fairy to be quite accurate and the best part is that it is FREE. Some words of advice is when you scan the document is to make sure the images are sharp (with good lighting) and the text is black on a white background.

How To Disable Login Screen on Windows 10 after Sleep – I have been recently assisting quite a few folks with breaking through the Windows 8.1 barrier to Windows 10. One of the most asked questions that I am receiving is “How do I disable the login screen on Windows 10 after sleep?”. What this means is that Windows 10, by default, will go into a sleep mode when the computer is idle for a prescribed period of time. When the end user comes out the sleep mode, the computer will prompt you for your password. To change this setting, to prevent or disable the login prompt, is actually quite easy and the best way to show you is for you the watch the video below from Simple How To Guide

This Software May Be Useful When You Sell or Get Rid Of Your Hard Drive (or PC) – Came a across this portable app, called My Disk Wiper, that may be a keeper for the tech toolbox. What this portable app does is securely wipe hard drives, flash drives, SD cards, etc… by overwriting the files with a standard pattern that the developer claims cannot be undeleted or restored. To ensure maximum privacy the file names are wiped before deletion.

Geek Squeaks (#2015-16) – Featuring How To Link Outlook Email To Other Accounts — and MORE FREE STUFF

How To Link Outlook Email To Other Accounts – Just had a friend ask me, “How do I link Outlook Email To Other Accounts?”; especially, if IMAP or POP accounts. Did some quick research on this and found, by chance, that Digital Trends just posted an article, “Want to link Outlook with other email accounts? Here’s how” that is a quick study article that will help you resolve this issue in automatically or manually making the connections to your other accounts… If you have multiple email accounts, from various services, this article will help you pull all of your email (from these accounts) into Outlook, which is a big timesaver and makes reading your email more efficient.

Use Strong Patterns When Using Lock Patterns On Your Smartphone Or Tablet – Do you use lock patterns on your portable devices (such as smartphones and tablets)? Just like traditional passwords, some good research is showing we are just as predictable with lock patterns. What this means is that someone with some know how can access your device, in a short time, because your lock pattern is way to simple and easy to figure out. As humans, we are always looking for simplicity and convenience. I encourage you to read, “Lock patterns are more predictable than we thought” at the Android Authority…

“Humans are predictable. We’re seeing the same aspects used when creating a pattern lock [as are used in] pin codes and alphanumeric passwords.” -Marte Løge

FREE Online Audio Converter – What online cloud computing has brought to us is tools that can be used, in our web browser, to perform various functions without the need to install traditional software. One such example is Online Audio Converter. This online tool allows converting audio into a wide range of major formats such as mp3, wav, ogg, m4a, m4r, flac. Because the audio files are converted online, you don’t have to install software on your computer. Just open your browser, go to the Online Audio Converter site, and start converting. I have added this site to the downloads page under the cloud computing apps swarm.
